Skill Chapter Lead – Operations and Checkout Engineering

About the role

METRO.digital, the technology arm of METRO, a leading international wholesaler of food, is looking for an Engineering Skill Chapter Lead for its Operations and Checkout Tech Chapter. The teams in this chapter build the technology that keeps METRO stores running and enables customers to complete their purchases, covering store operations, logistics, stock management, checkout, payments and invoicing. As Skill Chapter Lead you will lead and grow a team of 30+ engineers and drive engineering excellence across the full lifecycle, from architecture and implementation to testing and operations.

Key responsibilities

• Lead, coach and develop a diverse team of 30+ engineering professionals, supporting performance management and career growth
• Develop chapter strategies for future capability evolution and foster a culture of learning, collaboration and innovation
• Define and enforce best practices, standards and methodologies
• Provide technical leadership to squads and platforms, contribute to design council decisions and ABR requests (including budget input)
• Drive operational stability and security hardening in line with technology KPIs
• Stay updated on industry trends and emerging technologies and enable their adoption at METRO
• Contribute to roadmaps and strategies, and allocate chapter members to squads based on skills and priorities
• Collaborate with other chapter leads, squad leads and senior management on strategic initiatives
• Manage chapter operations and administration

Required profile

• University degree in Computer Science, Engineering or another relevant field
• 5-8 years of experience in engineering leadership roles such as Engineering Manager
• Experience leading engineering teams, ideally in Operations and/or Checkout domains
• Demonstrated experience managing topics combining business and IT needs
• Leadership of international teams across different locations and cultures; experience in matrix organizations is a plus
• Experience defining and managing common standards and ways of working
• Very good English, written and spoken
