AI Engineer – AI & Automation Platform

About the role

METRO.digital, the digital arm of METRO, one of the leading international wholesalers in food, is looking for an AI Engineer in Bucharest. The role unlocks AI's potential across the organization by integrating existing cloud models and APIs rather than inventing new algorithms, and by building digital agents that deliver pragmatic, secure, maintainable and observable AI-powered solutions.

Key responsibilities

• Rapidly deliver business-driven AI solutions by integrating existing cloud models and APIs, focusing on practical implementation
• Translate business goals into AI-powered solutions, working with squad leads, data scientists, architects and full-stack engineers
• Integrate Google Cloud AI services and ML models into microservices and workflows
• Design, implement, deploy and monitor intelligent agents supporting automation and personalization
• Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines with Cloud Build and GitHub Actions, with DevOps and SREs
• Maintain documentation (API references, runbooks, architecture diagrams) and give internal demos and training
• Ensure compliance with METRO's responsible AI and ethical standards

Required profile

• Proven experience with Google Cloud Platform development (Vertex AI, Document AI, BigQuery ML, Agent Development Framework)
• Strong knowledge of third-party LLMs (OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, Azure OpenAI) and prompt and context engineering
• Knowledge of microservices architecture and agentic development (e.g. Google Agent Development Kit)
• Team player, fast learner, fluent in written and spoken English

Required skills

• Programming languages, with Python as a must
• CI/CD pipelines on Google Cloud Platform
• Knowledge of BigQuery
