Java Engineer - Payments and Settlement Services

About the role

ING Hubs Romania is hiring a Java Engineer for its Payments and Settlement Services team, which maintains the Real-Time Payments Engine (RTPE). RTPE is a mission-critical, 24/7 platform processing high-volume, low-latency transactions across ING, playing a central role in SEPA, instant payments and ISO 20022 message processing. The role works in a 24/7 production environment and supports continuous modernization, such as migrating from legacy integrations to Java-based listeners and event-driven architectures.

Key responsibilities

• Work on user stories broken down from features, owning them end-to-end: analysis, development, testing, release and production support.
• Design, develop and maintain Java-based real-time processing components.
• Implement and maintain message-driven integrations (MQ, Kafka, APIs).
• Work with ISO 20022 payment messages (e.g. pacs.008, pacs.002, camt).
• Take part in incident analysis, root cause investigations and production improvements.
• Collaborate with SRE, product owners and global engineering teams, and contribute to non-functional requirements such as performance, resilience, scalability and security.
• Comply with ING IT risk, audit and security requirements and take part in Scrum ceremonies.

Required profile

• 5+ years of Java development experience (Java 17 and Java 21).
• Scrum experience, with a strong preference for agile ways of working.
• Good communication skills and openness to feedback.
• Nice to have: knowledge of ISO 20022 standards, some treasury project experience, advanced English, and a bachelor's degree in an IT-related field.
