Senior Java Engineer – Distributed Systems & Serverless

About the role

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join the Elasticsearch Distributed Systems team, focusing on scale, performance, and resilience for our Serverless offering.

Key responsibilities

• Build and operate core components of the next‑generation Serverless Elasticsearch offering.
• Improve concurrent and consistent indexing across multiple machines.
• Maintain cluster coordination to ensure high performance as nodes join, leave, or move data.
• Push limits on shards, nodes, and petabytes Elasticsearch can handle.
• Investigate performance or concurrency issues and propose solutions.
• Support support engineers with complex problems and own end‑to‑end operational investigations.

Required profile

• Deep background in distributed systems and consensus algorithms.
• Strong expertise in core Java, data structures, and concurrency constructs.
• Proficiency in algorithms and ability to work on complex, highly distributed systems.
• Experience building and debugging features that run on multiple machines.
• Ability to own projects from design through implementation.
• Proven track record of using AI to accelerate development and debugging.
